A year after the unexpected death of Sprout Grady's older sister, Magda, her family takes a pilgrimage to their secluded forest retreat. Roy (Sprout’s father), Percy (her little brother), and Sprout Grady are in quiet mourning, trying to keep Magda’s memory alive. Meanwhile, Sprout has just turned 13 and is having confused feelings about boys and growing up, which is only exacerbated by her father’s extreme sexual repression. Visiting them is the widowed Park Ranger, Stella Woodhouse, a sensual yet motherly soul and her son Max, a handsome boy who takes Sprout’s breath away.
